Don Hernando de Manrique de Rojas

Spanish officials in the New World heard of Jean Ribaut's settlement of Charlesfort at Port Royal (South Carolina) and sent a force from Havana under Don Hernando de Manrique de Rojas to drive out the intruders. He arrived in early 1564, found the abandoned Charlesfort, destroyed it, and captured a young Frenchman, Guillaume Rouffi, who had decided to stay with the Indians rather than risk the Atlantic crossing. Manrique took Rouffi to Havana and reported to the Spanish authorities there that the fort had been destroyed.
