Anthony Ashley Cooper, 2nd Earl of Shaftesbury


January 16, 1652 to November 2, 1699

Anthony Ashley Cooper, 2nd Earl of Shaftesbury (January 16, 1652 - November 2, 1699) was the eldest son of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury and Lady Frances Cecil, daughter of David Cecil, 3rd Earl of Exeter. In 1669, he married Lady Dorothy Manners, daughter of John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland - they had three sons and four daughters.

He inherited his father's share of Carolina upon his father's death in 1683.

Anthony Ashley Cooper, 2nd Earl of Shaftesbury was a Member of Parliament for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis (1670–1679). In 1683, he succeeded his father in the earldom and entered the House of Lords. He was Vice-Admiral of Dorset (1679–1699).


Upon his death in 1699, his share of Carolina was inherited by his eldest son, Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury.
