Carolina Lords Proprietors

Edward Bertie

Edward Bertie (1696 - 1733) was the second son of James Bertie, a graduate of Christ Church, Oxford, and a barrister (attorney).

In 1725, the Lords Proprietors appointed Edward Bertie as Secretary and Registrar of South Carolina.

In 1728, his father transferred his share of Carolina to four young men, one being his son - Edward Bertie (this man), Alexius Clayton, Samuel Horsey, and Henry Smith - in hopes they would drive the best bargain in his behalf when this share was sold to the Crown in 1728/1729.
