Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort

April 2, 1684 to May 24, 1714

Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort (April 2, 1684 - May 24, 1714) was the son of Charles Somerset, Marquess of Worcester and Rebecca Child. He was styled Earl of Glamorgan until 1698, and Marquess of Worcester from 1698 until his grandfather's death on 21 January 1700, when he succeeded him as 2nd Duke of Beaufort.

Henry Somerset married three times: First Marriage- on 7 July 1702 to Mary Sackville, daughter of Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset, who died 18 June 1705, with whom he had no issue; Second Marriage - on 26 February 1706 to Rachel Noel, daughter of Wriothesley Baptist Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough, who died 13 September 1709 after giving birth, with whom he had three sons, two of which survived - Henry and Charles Noel; and Third Marriage - on 14 September 1711, to Mary Osborne, her first marriage, daughter of Peregrine Osborne, 2nd Duke of Leeds, who died 4 February 1722, with whom he had no issue.

He was Captain of the Gentlemen Pensioners (1712–1714), Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire (1710–1714), and Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire (1712–1714).

Via his mother's second marriage to John Grenville, 1st Baron Granville of Potheridge, Henry Somerset inherited this share of Carolina upon Grenville's death in 1701.

Upon the death of William Craven, 2nd Baron Craven on October 9, 1711, Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort was named the eighth Palatine of Caroline.

Dying at the age of thirty, on May 24, 1714, Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort was buried at St Michael and All Angels Church, Badminton. His share of Carolina was left in a trust to his two living minor sons - Henry Somerset, 3rd Duke of Beaufort, and Charles Noel Somerset, 4th Duke of Beaufort - and this trust was managed by Doddington Greville until they reached maturity.

Upon his death, Sir John Carteret, 2nd Baron Carteret (later 2nd Earl of Granville) was named the ninth and last Palatine of Carolina.
