Carolina Lords Proprietors

John Cotton

John Cotton of the Middle Temple and of East Barnet in Middlesex was the second son of John Cotton of Ashill in Norfolk. He built his estate, Little Grove (first named New Place), in 1719. His daughter, Elizabeth, married Sir John Tyrrell around 1725, and they had three sons.

In 1727, Sir John Tyrrell gave his share of Carolina, which he had purchased in 1725 from Maurice Ashley, to his father-in-law, John Cotton, and this share was placed in a trust managed by Archibald Hutcheson.

John Cotton sold his share of Carolina to the Crown in 1728/1729.
