North Carolina in the American Civil War

North Carolina Civil War Military Units by County

The companies herein assigned to the CSA were mostly raised at the county level - all companies of NC Militia and NC Home Guard were certainly raised at the county level. As the war progressed, newer companies assigned to the CSA required men from several counties, and they are annotated thusly. Even later in the war, men assigned to the CSA were transferred from one regiment to another without consideration of which county they were from - so - later companies had men from many counties that were not envisioned at the start of the war. Since there were so many situations like this, these later companies do not necessarily state all counties represented - just too hard. Additionally, as the war continued a small number of Lieutenants were transferred and promoted to Captain over a company that had no men from his original county - those are not named in what follows, but they are identified in the list of Captains found in another section of this website. War proves that inconsistencies are necessary.
