| Buncombe County decreased in size in 1808 when Haywood County was created, in 1833 when Yancey County was created, in 1838 when Henderson County was created, and in 1851 when Madison County was created. Buncombe County was increased in size in 1925, when McDowell County transferred some land to Buncombe County. Its population grew from 5,812 in 1800 to 206,330 in 2000.
