| Orange County decreased in size in 1771 when it ceded land for the creation of Chatham County, Guilford County, and part of Wake County, in 1777 when Caswell County was created, in 1849 when Alamance County was created, and again in 1881 when Durham County was created. Its population grew from 12,216 in 1790 to 115,331 in 2000.
