| Rutherford County decreased in size in 1791 when
Buncombe County was created, in 1841 when Cleveland County was
created, in 1842 when McDowell County was created, in 1842-45
when it ceded more land to Cleveland County, and again in 1855
when Polk County was created. Its population grew from 7,808
in 1790 to 62,901 in 2000. Click on the maps below to peruse
