| Rutherford County decreased in size in 1791 when Buncombe County was created, in 1841 when Cleveland County was created, in 1842 when McDowell County was created, in 1842-45 when it ceded more land to Cleveland County, and again in 1855 when Polk County was created. Its population grew from 7,808 in 1790 to 62,901 in 2000.
