| Tyrrell County decreased in size in 1774 when Martin County was created, in 1799 when Washington County was created, and again in 1870 when Dare County was created. Tyrrell County increased in size in 1890 when Hyde County ceded some lands to Tyrrell County (ratified by Law in 1921). Its population decreased from 4,744 in 1790 to 4,149 in 2000.
