Evolution of Boundaries - With Known Towns & Villages

Wilkes County decreased in size in 1799 when Ashe County was created; in 1841 when Caldwell County was created; in 1847 when Alexander County was created; and again in 1849 when Watauga County was created.

Its population grew from 8,143 in 1790 to 69,340 in 2010.
