Elizabethtown
On December 23, 1797, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to establish the Bladen Academy in Bladen County. Ten (10) trustees were named in the Act.
On December 23, 1808, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to authorize the trustees of Elizabethtown Academy, in Bladen County, to rent out The Fishery on the town commons for three (3) years.
On December 21, 1809, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to repeal the above-referenced Act passed in 1808. The trustees of Elizabethtown Academy may no longer rent out The Fishery on the town commons.
On December 21, 1810, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to amend an unnamed previous Act to establish a seminary of learning in Elizabethtown in Bladen County. Thirty-seven (37) new trustees were named to oversee the Elizabethtown Academy.
On February 16, 1855, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to incorporate the Cape Fear Academy in Bladen County. Nine (9) trustees were named in the Act.

In the Biennial Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the scholastic years of 1889 and 1890, it was reported that there were two private schools for white children in Bladen County: Clarkton High School in the village of Clarkton with Rev. James Kelly as principal and 76 students enrolled; and, White Oak Academy in the village of Winnie with Rev. William Brunt as principal and 28 students enrolled.
