Burgaw
On March 3, 1877, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to incorporate the Lillington Academy in Pender County. Seven (7) trustees were named in the Act.
On February 8, 1879, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to incorporate the Burgaw Male and Female Academy in the town of Burgaw in Pender County. Five (5) trustees were named in the Act.
On March 1, 1889, the North Carolina General Assembly passed an Act to incorporate the existing Long Creek High School in the village of Long Creek in Pender County. Five (5) trustees were named in the Act.
In the Biennial Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the scholastic years of 1889 and 1890, it was reported that there were eight (8) private schools for white children and two (2) private schools for colored children in Pender County. The private schools for white children were:

In 1899, the Maple Hill High School was established on August 17th in the village of Maple Hill in northeastern Pender County. George G. Noble was named its first principal.
In the Biennial Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the scholastic years of 1899 and 1900, it was reported that there were seven (7) private schools in Pender County:
