On 9/9/1775, Howell Edmunds was commissioned as a 2nd Major under Col. Allen Jones in the Northampton County Regiment of Militia.

During the 1Q of 1780, Howell Edmunds was commissioned as a Colonel in the Northampton County Regiment of Militia, alongside Col. William Eaton. Col. Howell Edmunds resigned/retired in late 1780.

Howell Edmunds was a member of the House of Commons from Northampton County in the Colonial Assembly during 1768-1771. At some point in time, he was also elected as Sheriff of Northampton County. In 1775, he was elected as a delegate to the 3rd Provincial Congress from Northampton County. In 1776, he was elected as a delegate to the 4th Provinical Congress and the 5th Provincial Congress from Northampton County. After statehood, Howell Edmunds was elected as a member of the House of Commons from Northampton County during 1777, 1784, and 1785.
