On 9/9/1775, James Long was commissioned as a 1st Major under Col. Edward Buncombe in the Tyrrell County Regiment of Militia.

On 4/22/1776, James Long was commissioned as a Lt. Colonel under Col. Clement Cook in the Tyrrell County Regiment of Militia, after Col. Edward Buncombe was given command of the 5th NC Regiment.

During February of 1779, James Long was commissioned as Colonel/Commandant over the Tyrrell County Regiment of Militia, after Col. Benjamin Blount resigned that month, a position he retained until the end of the war (assumed, records incomplete).
