Lt. Col. William Washington (VA) sent out several groups to patrol his assigned area and one patrol ran across and killed a group of 23 Loyalists driving cattle towards Lord Cornwallis's camp. This, along with recent Loyalist losses at Haw River, caused many Loyalists on their way to join Lord Cornwallis to turn around and go back home before even joining up.
