References to the "Battle of Kirk's Lane" or "Kirk's" can be found in pension applications from Orange County. It was probably a local name for the Battle of Hillsborough, which took place on Sept. 12, 1781. A force of Americans loyal to the British raided the town of Hillsborough, which was then the seat of North Carolina's government, and took 200 American patriots (Whigs) prisoner. |
