On May 1st, General Sir Henry Clinton ordered Fort Johnston to be demolished because Patriot riflemen had used its remains to hide among while firing upon the nearby British fleet for days. This action did not stop the sniping. The Royal Navy moved 200 yards from shore, but they were still fired upon by the marksmen.

Five shots hit the armed transport Sovereign. Some of the shots flew over the Sovereign and hit men on the transport Glasgow Packet behind her, killing two men and wounding two. The HMS Cruizer and the Sovereign fired back with their artillery and drove the snipers away.

The British ships continued to move and then anchored 400 yards from the shore, however, the sniping resumed. There were "between fifty and sixty of the Rebels well armed, and draped in caps and hunting frocks." They did not cause much damage due to the increased distance. The schooner St. Lawrence fired 4-pounders and swivel guns at the riflemen with no effect.

On May 2nd, General Clinton landed ten companies near Fort Johnston to try to eliminate the snipers, but they only found tracks from the Patriots' horses. General Clinton's men searched for four miles inland and found no one. On the morning of May 3rd, the Patriot snipers returned. Again, the HMS Cruizer fired back with her guns, and the Patriots were silenced once again.

Realizing that the British were not going away anytime soon, Capt. Alfred Moore left Ft. Johnston for good.
