British Major James H. Craig became bolder after each trip out of his occupation headquarters within Wilmington along the southern coast of North Carolina, so he went further and further away each trip. Each time, Major General Richard Caswell's Patriot Militia sniped and harassed them along their march.

Near Kingston, the Patriots attempted once again to stop Maor. Craig, but they were forced to retreat when Capt. John Gordon of the NC Independent Dragoons charged. No casualties were recorded by either side.
