Railroads already operational prior to 1861:

+ Petersburg Railroad. Operational in 1833.
+ Seaboard & Roanoke Railroad. Operational in 1846.
+ Wilmington & Weldon Railroad. Operational in 1840.
+ Raleigh & Gaston Railroad. Operational in 1840. 
+ Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Rail Road. Operational in 1869. Merger of the Columbia & Augusta Rail Road and the Charlotte & South Carolina Rail Road.
+ Wilmington & Carolina Rail Road. Operational in 1870. Was the Wilmington & Manchester Rail Road.
+ North Carolina Rail Road. Operational in 1856.
+ Atlantic & North Carolina Rail Road. Operational in 1858.
+ Western North Carolina Rail Road. Operational in 1858 (partial).
+ Western Rail Road. Operational in 1861 (partial).
+ Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford Rail Road. Operational in 1861 (part)

Railroads completed between 1861 and 1870:

+ Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio Rail Road. Operational in 1863.
+ Chatham Rail Road. Operational in 1870.
+ Cheraw & Salisbury Rail Road. Operational in 1867.
+ Piedmont Rail Road. Operational in 1863.

+ Atlantic & North Carolina Rail Road.
+ Western Rail Road.
+ Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford Rail Road.

+ 1862 - Florence & Fayetteville Rail Road, aka Fayetteville & Florence Rail Road.
+ 1868 - North-Western North Carolina Rail Road.
+ 1868 - Western Division of the Western North Carolina Rail Road. Charter repealed in 1879.
+ 1869 - Jamesville & Washington Rail Road.
+ 1870 - Elizabeth City & Norfolk Rail Road.
+ 1870 - Atlanta & Richmond Air Line Railway.

The following railroad companies were chartered between 1861 and 1870, but there is no evidence available that they were ever constructed:

+ 1861 - Williamston & Tarboro Rail Road. 1873, re-organized as the Seaboard & Raleigh Railroad.
+ 1861 - University Rail Road.

+ 1862 - Washington & Tarboro Rail Road.
+ 1862 - Dallas & Newton Rail Road.
+ 1863 - Shelby & Broad River Rail Road.

+ 1869 - Davidson Rail Road.
+ 1869 - Edenton & Norfolk Rail Road. 1883, re-organized as the Carolina & Chesapeake Rail Road.
+ 1869 - Scotland Neck & Weldon Rail Road. (probably the W&W Scotland Neck Branch)
+ 1869 - Asheboro & Albemarle Rail Road.
+ 1869 - Louisburg Branch of the Wilmington & Weldon Rail Road.
+ 1869 - Norfolk & Currituck Rail Road.
+ 1869 - Wilmington & Seaside Rail Road. 1879, acquired by the Wilmington, Wrightsville & Onslow Rail Road.
+ 1869 - Granville Rail Road. 1883, renamed to the Atlantic & Western Railway.
+ 1869 - Valley Rail Road.
+ 1870 - Planter's Rail Road. 1871, merged with the Wilmington & Onslow Rail Road to become the Wilmington & Planters Railway.
+ 1870 - Tar River Railroad.
+ 1870 - Shelby & South Carolina Rail Road.
+ 1870 - Georgetown & Charlotte Rail Road.
+ 1870 - Onslow Branch of the Wilmington & Weldon Rail Road.
