*1906 acquired by Southern Railway. Abandoned in 1970s. This line ran north from Asheville along the French Broad River until it reached Beaver Dam. An amended charter in 1903 allowed for an extension across the French Broad River towards Burnsville in Yancey County and on to the TN/SC State Line, if the company chose to go that far. However, only seven (7) miles of track were actually laid. From 1890 to 1892, the line had 2-1/2 miles of track from Chestnut Street in Asheville to the city limits (at that time) and the Golf Club Station, and only operated during summer months. From 1897 to 1900, this line was abandoned, then acquired by a new private owner. The line was rebuilt and converted to electric locomotives. By 1902, it was extended to Locust Gap, and this 1-1/2 mile addition was served by steam locomotives. In April 1906, Southern Railway acquired control through stock acquisition. |
