1994 acquired from Norfolk Southern Railway by the Caldwell County Economic Development Commission. The Caldwell County Railroad operates between Hickory and Lenoir, serving businesses in Catawba and Caldwell counties in North Carolinas western piedmont . The railroad began service in 1994 over a former Norfolk Southern Railway branch line that was purchased by the Caldwell County Economic Development Commission. It was subsequently leased to Caldwell County Railroad Company, a subsidiary of Southeast Shortlines Inc. Commodities carried by the railroad are plastics and building materials. The company has two engines and transports over 38,000 tons annually. It connects to the Norfolk Southern Railway at Hickory, NC. On March 21, 2007, the Caldwell County Railroad filed a request with the Surface Transportation Board to abandon five miles of its line near Lenoir to near Valmead. This was approved on July 9, 2007.
