*1852 reorganized as the Charlotte & South Carolina Railroad.

This was the first railroad in operation to the small town of Charlotte. It was soon followed by many others, making Charlotte a major railroad hub within the state of North Carolina.

On February 18th of 1865, Sherman's troops, moving in two columns, the 17th and 20th corps, marched from Columbia to Winnsboro, thirty miles north, on the Charlotte & Columbia Railroad, which was thoroughly destroyed.
