The Deep Gap Tie & Lumber Company Railroad followed what is roughly US Highway 221 where it branches off US Highway 421 east of Boone. It operated alongside Gap Creek, from Deep Gap, in Watauga County, to the South Fork of the New River, near Fleetwood, in Ashe County, a distance of about five miles.
