*1914 acquired by Carolina, Atlantic & Western Railroad. The North & South Carolina Railway was created in 1908 specifically to construct a track from Gibson, North Carolina southward to the Pee Dee River in South Carolina to connect to the under-construction extension of the Georgetown & Western Railroad at that time. Construction began immediately with track completed twenty-nine (29) miles to Dillon, SC in 1909, seventeen (17) miles further to Mullins, SC in 1910, and in 1911 reaching the Pee Dee River - a total of sixty-eight (68) miles. A jointly-owned bridge was constructed in 1911 to join the North & South Carolina Railroad with the Georgetown & Western Railroad, and the line was officially opened for the entire route. The North & South Carolina Railroad took over operations of the Seaboard Air Line Railway trackage between Hamlet, NC and Gibson, NC. The entire line was folded into the Carolina, Atlantic & Western Railroad in 1914. |
