In the late 1980s, pieces of this line were sold to CSX Transportation, Inc.


The Virginia & Carolina Southern Railroad was incorporated under North Carolina laws on January 11, 1907. They had 65.8 miles of track. The route included stops in St. Pauls, Elizabethtown, Lumberton, and Hope Mills. They had four locomotives, seven freight and passenger cars and three gasoline motor cars. It was leased by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.

In 1922 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad leased the Virginia & Carolina Southern Railroad, running from Fayetteville south to Lumberton, with a spur to Elizabethtown within North Carolina.
