Olin DeWitt Talmadge Johnston died while in office on April 18, 1965. Donald Stuart Russell, the previous Governor of South Carolina, was appointed to temporarily replace him and he took his seat on April 22, 1965. Ernest Frederick Hollings, also a previous Governor of South Carolina, was elected to replace them both on November 8, 1966, but this congress was no longer in session.
