Elijah Curran "E.C." Burnett, III was born on January 26, 1942 in Spartanburg County, SC, the son of Elijah Curran Burnett, Jr. and Lucy (Byars) Burnett. He attended public schools in Spartanburg and graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1960. He received his B.A. Degree from Wofford College in 1964 and his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1969.

Elijah Curran "E.C." Burnett, III was a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve in active service from August of 1964 through August of 1966, serving in Vietnam from August of 1965 through August of 1966. Upon his return home, he was engaged in the private practice of law in Spartanburg, SC.

Elijah Curran Burnett, III married Jami Grant, and they had three children.

In 1971, Elijah Curran "E.C." Burnett, III was elected as one of eight men to represent Spartanburg County in the SC House of Representatives of the:
- 100th General Assembly that met from 1972 to 1973

In 1976, Elijah Curran "E.C." Burnett, III was elected as Probate Judge for Spartanburg County, a position he retained until 1980. He also served as Clerk of Court for Spartanburg County from February to June of 1978.

In 1980, Elijah Curran "E.C." Burnett, III was elected as a Family Court Judge in the 7th Judicial District. In 1981, he was elected as a Circuit Court Judge in the 7th Judicial District, where he remained until 1995.

On March 25, 1995, Elijah Currant "E.C." Burnett, III was elected as an Associate Justice on the SC Supreme Court, replacing Ernest Adolphus Finney, Jr, who had been elected Chief Justice the previous year. He was sworn in on April 10, 1995, and he served until he retired on February 1, 2007.

Elijah Curran "E.C." Burnett, III is a Life Member of Sertoma International and past President of Downtown Sertoma Club, where he received the Distinguished Honor Club President Award. He is also a member of the Spartanburg County and SC Bar Associations.
