George Tillman Gregory, Jr. was born on December 13, 1921 in McConnellsville (renamed to McConnells in 1951), SC,. the son of George Tillman Gregory and Inez (Anderson) Gregory. He overcame childhood polio to realize his lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer and judge. He graduated from Chester High School and then earned his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of South Carolina.

George Tillman Gregory, Jr. married Willie Mae Elliott; they had two known sons.

In 1944, George Tillman Gregory, Jr. began practicing law in Chester, SC. From 1946 to 1950, he sat on the Chester Municipal Court bench - another source asserts he was Recorder for the City of Chester during this timeframe.

In 1950, George Tillman Gregory, Jr. was first elected as one of two men to represent Chester County in the SC House of Representatives of the:
- 89th General Assembly that met from 1951 to 1952
- 91st General Assembly that met from 1955 to 1956

On February 8, 1956, George Tillman Gregory, Jr. was elected as a Judge of the 6th Judicial Circuit, and he resigned from the House of Representatives on March 29, 1956.

On May 7, 1975, George Tillman Gregory, Jr. was elected an Associate Justice in the SC Supreme Court, replacing Associate Justice Thomas Patrick Bussey, who was soon to retire.

On February 26, 1988, George Tillman Gregory, Jr. was elected Chief Justice of the SC Supreme Court, replacing Chief Justice Julius B. Ness, who had recently retired. He served as Chief Justice retired early in 1991.

On January 23, 2003, George Tillman Gregory, Jr. died in Chester, SC, and he was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, SC.
