John Gates Stabler was born on October 3, 1871. He graduated from Wofford College in 1905 and then taught Latin in Bamberg County, SC. He graduated in 1908 from the law school at the University of South Carolina, then practiced law in St. Matthews, SC.

In 1921, John Gates Stabler was first elected to represent Calhoun County in the SC Senate of the:
- 74th General Assembly that met from 1921 to 1922
- 75th General Assembly that met from 1923 to 1924
- 76th General Assembly that met from 1925 to 1926

On January 21, 1926, John Gates Stabler was elected as an Associate Justice in the SC Supreme Court and he resigned from the SC Senate. He took his seat on the SC Supreme Court in July of 1926.

In 1935, John Gates Stabler was elected as Chief Justice of the SC Supreme Court after the resignation of Chief Justice Eugene Satterwhite Blease on October 8, 1934. He retained his position until his death.

On January 3, 1940, John Gates Stabler died while in office in Columbia, SC, and he was buried in the West End Cemetery in Calhoun, SC.
