John Hardin Marion was born on October 23, 1874 near Rich Hill Cross Roads (renamed to Richburg in 1879) in Chester County, SC, the son of James Taylor Marion and Jane Amanthus (or Amanda) (Hardin) Marion. He graduated from the South Carolina College (later the University of South Carolina) with an A.B. and a LL.B in 1893. He first formed a law partnership with William A. Barber; in later years, he was senior partner in his own law firm of Marion & Marion in Chester, SC.

In 1898, John Hardin Marion served in the Spanish-American War as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company D of the 1st SC Infantry. He was later in the SC National Guard and retired in 1907 as Lieutenant Colonel.

On December 31, 1902, John Hardin Marion married Mary Pagan Davidson, daughter of William Lee Davidson and Annie Irvine (Pagan) Davidson; they had six known children.

In 1898, John Hardin Marion was elected as one of three men to represent Chester County in the SC House of Representatives of the:
- 63rd General Assembly that met from 1899 to 1900

In 1918, John Hardin Marion was elected to represent Chester County in the SC Senate of the:
- 73rd General Assembly that met from 1919 to 1920
- 74th General Assembly that met from 1921 to 1922

On January 18, 1922, John Hardin Marion was elected as an Associate Justice on the SC Supreme Court, replacing Associate Justice George Williams Gage, who had died the previous year. He resigned from the SC Senate on January 19, 1922 and then took the oath of office as Associate Justice that same day.

In 1926, John Hardin Marion resigned as Associate Justice to accept a position with Duke Power in Charlotte, NC.

On May 3, 1944, John Hardin Marion died in Charlotte, NC, and he was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, SC.
