The Commandant of Georgetown, Lt. Col. George Campbell, sent Cornet Thomas Merritt with some Queen's Rangers to make a quick raid of the Kingstree area. Afterward, Merritt and his men returned to Georgetown without incident. Col. Francis Marion learned of this raid and attempted to capture Cornet Merrit, but the small British contingent managed to get back to Georgetown safely.
