Brig. Gen. Thomas Sumter resumed his command in early November at the request of Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene, and he was moving towards Orangeburgh to continue operations in that area. A small force of Brig. Gen. Sumter’s Patriots encountered a larger force of Loyalists. A small skirmish broke out resulting in the rout of Brig. Gen. Sumter’s men.
