Two Patriot merchant ships sailing upriver near Sandy Point encountered a Loyalist vessel coming down river. The Loyalists ran their ship aground in an effort to escape capture. The Patriot ships approached the grounded Loyalist vessel and after a short action of small arms fire with them, the Loyalists jumped ashore and kept firing at the Patriots. The tide soon came in and the Patriots freed the boat and took it to Charleston.
