Patriot Col. Edward Barnwell with his Beaufort District Regiment
was sent to prevent the British from seizing rice from plantations
along the lower Savannah River. He was surprised by Maj. Andrew
Deveaux (Beaufort Loyalist Militia) and lost six men killed and
five men captured.
