During the Summer of 1779, the State of South Carolina created a new regiment of State Troops that was not placed on the Continental Line - the SC Light Dragoons, led by Col. Daniel Horry.

James Skirvin took over command of the Berkeley County Regiment as colonel, replacing Joseph Maybank. Both Isaac Hayne and James Williams were promoted from Lt. Colonel to Colonel as commanders of their regiments of militia.

In April, Gen. Augustine Prevost invaded South Carolina, marched to Charlestown and demanded its surrender, moved on to Stono Ferry and fought a strong retreating action there, then retired back to Savannah. The South Carolinians took the fight back to them in Savannah, but were again soundly defeated by the British.

It would not be long before the British up north refocued its attention on the South.
