In October of 1781, Maj. Gen. Nathanael
Greene asked Brig. Gen. Francis Marion to elevate his two regiments
of Light Dragoons, under Lt. Col. Peter Horry and Lt. Col. Hezekiah
Maham, to State Troops. Governor John Rutledge agreed because
the Militia refused to turn out in a timely manner.
In June of 1781, Col. Hugh Giles resigned
and John Ervin was promoted to full Colonel over the Lower Craven
County Regiment of militia.
In November of 1781, Lt. Col. Henry
Hampton left Sumter's Brigade and joined Marion's Brigade.
Gov. John Rutledge called for an election
of new State representatives in November, with the newly-elected
to be assembled in January of 1782.
