In October of 1781, Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene asked Brig. Gen. Francis Marion to elevate his two regiments of Light Dragoons, under Lt. Col. Peter Horry and Lt. Col. Hezekiah Maham, to State Troops. Governor John Rutledge agreed because the Militia refused to turn out in a timely manner.

In June of 1781, Col. Hugh Giles resigned and John Ervin was promoted to full Colonel over the Lower Craven County Regiment of militia.

In November of 1781, Lt. Col. Henry Hampton left Sumter's Brigade and joined Marion's Brigade.

Gov. John Rutledge called for an election of new State representatives in November, with the newly-elected to be assembled in January of 1782.
