Brig. Gen. Thomas Sumter sent Lt. Col. Richard Hampton and Col. Charles Myddleton south from Ancrum's Plantation to engage the enemy who was attempting to relieve the siege at Ninety-Six.

Lt. Col. Hampton (Orangeburgh District Regiment) defeated a force of about fifty SC Royalists at Vaudant's Old Field under the command of Ensign Henry Livingstone. Lt. Col. Hampton's men "killed several," including Ensign Livingstone. He also "made some prisoners, took a number of slaves, and thirty odd horses."
