Brigadier General Thomas Sumter sent Lt. Col. Richard Hampton and Col. Charles Myddleton south from Ancrum's Plantation to engage any of the enemy who may be attempting to relieve the siege at Ninety-Six.

Lt. Col. Richard Hampton (Orangeburgh District Regiment of Militia) defeated a force of about fifty SC Royalists at Vaudant's Old Field under the command of Ensign Henry Livingstone. Lt. Col. Hampton's men "killed several," including Ensign Livingstone. He also "made some prisoners, took a number of slaves, and thirty odd horses."
