After the fall of Charlestown, in June of 1780, Col. Hugh Giles raised a regiment of Patriot Militia, which included men from what is now Georgetown, Williamsburg, Marion, Florence, Horry, and Dillon counties. The official name was the Lower Craven County Regiment of Militia, but some called it the Britton's Neck Regiment or the Lynches River Regiment.
