As part of the early Saluda River navigation system, Lorick's Canal was built at a cost of $2,500 with one six-foot high lifting lock. Located on the north bank of the Saluda River at Lorick's Mill, about thirty-five miles from the Broad River, the canal is now under Lake Murray.

A very short canal, it was barely long enough to pass a mill dam. The lock was built of wood. The mill owner paid $1,500 of the total costs to prevent the sluicing of his dam. Col. Nesbitt was the contractor.
