The Ashley River Railroad opened on December 27, 1877, the last link in the coast line of railways from New York to Jacksonville, Florida. A new bridge over the Ashely River replaced a ferry. This was reported in the New York Times on 12/28/1877.

It was owned by Plant Systems.
