Carolina Lords Proprietors

Thomas Archdale

Thomas Archdale (1676 - 1711) was the only son of John Archdale and Anne Dobson Cary Archdale. On August 20, 1699, he married Jane, daughter of Charles Turner of King's Lynn, Norfolk - they had two daughters. Following his education at Wadham College, Oxford, he and a servant travelled to the Netherlands in 1703. He is buried in the church at High Wycombe, where his family originated.

Thomas Archdale was a Member of Parliament, representing Wycombe from 1699 to 1700.

In 1678, his father purchased the share of Carolina originally owned by John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton, who had just died. This share was purchased on behalf of Thomas Archdale by his father. Upon reaching maturity, Thomas Archdale sold his share of Carolina to his cousin, Joseph Blake, in 1696.
