This battalion was first formed on May 25, 1864, with three (3) companies: Company AFranklin, Nash, and Warren CountiesCapt. Charles Price; 1st Lt. Christopher C. Smith; 2nd Lt. Ernest S. Fosther; 3rd Lt. William B.F. Coppedge. Company BGranville CountyCapt. David S. Speed; 1st Lt. Robert L. Crews; 2nd Lt. Thomas L. Daniel; 3rd Lt. Albert Thorpe. Company CWake CountyCapt. Cornelius J. Richardson; 1st Lt. Andrew J. Alford; 2nd Lt. William H. Crabtree; 3rd Lt. Gaston R. Smith. On June 15, 1864, a fourth company was added to this battalion: Company DOrange and Anson CountiesCapt. Montesque C. Nixon; 1st Lt. James T. Farthing, replaced by William F. Hargrave (was 3rd Lt); 2nd Adolphus D. Markham, replaced by Benajmin F. Weaver (was 3Sergeant); 3rd Lt. William F. Hargrave, replaced by Gabriel Holmes. Charles Wetmore Broadfoot, of Cumberland County, was elected Major on May 26, 1864. He was later Lt. Colonel of the 1st NC Regiment Junior Reserves. On July 4, 1864, this battalion was consolidated with the 6th NC Battalion - Junior Reserves to create the 1st NC Regiment Junior Reserves.
