[Walter Clark, editor of the source cited below, gave this regiment the nomenclature of 83rd NC Regiment, but it was never known as this contemporaneously. There were no legitimate NC Regiments numbered past the 69th NC Regiment (7th Cavalry). Later regiments were created for Reserves and for Detailed Men, which had their own numbering schema. Clark also noted that this unit was the 3rd NC Regiment Detailed Men, but that is certainly incorrect, as well.] This regiment was commanded by Col. Thomas S. Bouchell and was in the brigade composed of the three (3) regiments of Detailed Men which by order of Lt. Gen. Theophilus H. Holmes (NC) on January 12, 1865, were brigaded and placed under command of Col. William J. Hoke. We have no information as to its services nor as to its officers. The muster rolls of these three (3) regiments are doubtless among those captured at Charlotte, to which point they were removed after the fall of Richmond, and which are now in the Record and Pension Bureau at Washington. Some day, Congress will doubtless order all these rolls printed. But until that is done the names of the officers and men of this regiment will be lost save the name of its Colonel, which alone has been preserved. * The above was written by Editor Walter Clark and provided as Page 133, in the compilation known as "Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions from North Carolina in the Great War 1861-'65 - Volume IV," edited by Walter Clark, and published by E. M. Uzzell, Printer and Binder, in 1901. Minor edits, additons, and deletions were provided by this Author for clarity and consistency. The following comes from "North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865, A Roster, Volume XVIII, Senior Reserves & Detailed Men," Pages 437-440: On September 26, 1864, the following Field Officers were elected: Col. Thomas Slayter Bouchelle, of Wilkes County. Also on or before September 26, 1864, the following company officers were elected: Company AYadkin CountyCapt. Thomas Williams; 1st
lt. Willis J. Dickson; 2nd Lt. Wiley F. Shore; 3rd Lt. Calvin
E. Shore. The rosters for Company I and Company K have not been located so far. |
