Brief History of Battalion*
[Walter Clark admitted that he numbered most battalions "for convenience," and he unilaterally called this unit the "Twenty-Third Battalion" in his compilation named below.] This was the 3rd NC Battalion - Senior Reserves. There was another battalion called the 3rd Battalion of Reserves which was commanded by Maj. Boaz F. Hooks. That battalion, 160 strong, was reported on June 1, 1864 (108 Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, 988), as being then on duty guarding the Neuse River Bridge just south of Goldsborough, which had once been burnt by the enemy. That battalion, however, was consolidated with other companies into the 8th NC Regiment Senior Reserves, and after serving with it in both assaults on Fort Fisher, formed part of Col. George C. Jackson's Brigade at Bentonville, March 19-21, 1865. This Battalion was composed of Senior Reserves from Granville and adjoining counties. It was organized in Raleigh in late August of 1864, then electing James T. Littlejohn, of Oxford, as Major on September 14, 1864. William Daniel, of Company C, was made Adjutant with rank of Lieutenant. It was composed of four (4) companies commanded respectively by Capt. John W. Perry, Company A; Capt. Isaac Laws (resigned), then Capt. Mark Durham, Company B; Capt. Benjamin J. Blackley, Company C, Capt. David W. Williams, Company D. 1st Lt. Alpheus Bobbitt is also incidentally mentioned with Company D. It was ordered to Raleigh (apparently having been furloughed) on October 21st, and was sent to Wilmington with Maj. Franz Josef Hahr's Battalion - Light Duty Men, and saw several months service there, probably under command of Col. George C. Jackson. On March 17, 1865 Capt. John W. Perry, of Company A, then in command of the battalion, was investigated and reprimanded for giving some of his men furloughs without higher authority. [According to "North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865, A Roster, Volume XVIII, Senior Reserves and Detailed Men," Page 115, Capt. Perry "with about seventy men of his command left without authority" on March 14, 1865. He was ordered on March 17, 1865 to report under arrest to the Reserves Headquarters, but as of April 5, 1865, he had not turned himself in.] * The above was written by Editor Walter Clark, and provided as Page 399, in the compilation known as "Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions from North Carolina in the Great War 1861-'65 - Volume IV," edited by Walter Clark, and published by E.
