Brief History of Battalion*

Major Peter G. Evans' Battalion, NC Partisan Rangers began on September 12-14, 1862 when five (5) Independent Companies were assembed at Kinston, NC under Maj. Peter G. Evans:

1st Company—Captain Stephen B. Evans, Craven County, to rank from June 12, 1862.
2nd Company—Captain John M. Galloway, Rockingham County, to rank from August 1, 1862.
3rd Company—Captain Thomas W. Harris, Chatham County, to rank from August 3, 1862 .
4th Company—Captain John R. Erwin, Mecklenburg County, to rank from August 5, 1862.
5th Company—Captain John B. McClenahan, Chatham County, to rank from August 8, 1862.

1st Company was assigned to various duties in and around Kinston. On September 15th, two (2) officers and thirty-eight (38) men were sent to picket south of the Tar River, where they remained until September 25th. On October 1st, two (2) officers and twenty-nine (29) men were sent to Core Creek above New Bern to observe Federal activity in that area. The entire company marched to Marlborough, in Pitt County, on October 9th, and from there to Tarborough, in Edgecombe County, on the next day. They arrived at Garysburg, in Northampton County, on October 13th.

2nd Company was assigned to various duties in and around Kinston until October 18, 1862, when it began marching towards Garysburg in Northampton County, NC. They arrived on November 5th.

3rd Company was assigned to picket duty on Street's Ferry, then returned to Kinston after one week. On October 9, 1862, it began marching towards Garysburg in Northampton County, NC, and they arrived on October 13th.

4th Company was assigned picket duty along the Neuse River and on Swift Creek until October 9, 1862, when it began marching towards Garysburg in Northampton County, NC. They arrived on October 14th.

5th Company was assigned to courier duty below Kinston, south of the Neuse River, and remained encamped five (5) miles below Kinston until October 17, 1862, when it began marching towards Garysburg in Northampton County, NC. They arrived on October 23rd.

As these five (5) companies arrived in Camp Long at Garysburg, they were assigned to the recently-established 63rd NC Regiment (5th Cavalry) and all subsequent information will be found at the 63rd NC Regiment webpage herein.
