North Carolina in the American Civil War

North Carolina Railroads - 1860 to 1865
Before the American Civil War began, North Carolina had approximately 1,065 miles of railroads, with many more miles under construction. After the war began, a priority was placed on completing the Piedmont Railroad, and this was accomplished in 1863. The Western North Carolina Railroad was extended from Morganton to Old Fort, bringing the total number of miles to approximately 1,125 miles of railroads. The Roanoke Valley Railroad was destroyed and never rebuilt.
