Evolution of Boundaries - With Known Towns & Villages

Burke County decreased in size in 1791 when Buncombe County was created; in 1833 when Yancey County was created; in 1841 when Caldwell County was created; and in 1842 when McDowell County was created.

Its population grew from 8,118 in 1790 to 90,912 in 2010.
