Evolution of Boundaries - With Known Towns & Villages

Madison County decreased in size in 1839 when Cherokee County was created; in 1851 when Jackson County was created; in 1871 when Swain County was created; and again in 1872 when it gave some land to Clay County.

Its population grew from 5,908 in 1860 to 20,764 in 2010.
