Washington County was a renaming of the existing Washington District in 1777. In 1779, Sullivan County was created out of Washington County. In 1783, Greene County was created out of Washington County. In 1790, this Washington County was ceded to the Territory South of the Ohio River, also known as the Southwest Territory. In 1796, this Washington County became part of the newly-created state of Tennessee. |
